[Ariyah – Lady Washington – The Stores – BoL – Fame 2 – A]
Yuri’s story about his sire made Ariyah smile humourlessly; it was not a pleasant expression. “Just because someone is nice or friendly doesn’t mean they don’t have enemies. Sometimes people may hate you just for being nice.”
Ariyah thought about her own sire and how he thought he was friends with everyone and neutral in all politics, and yet someone had hated him enough to…
“And I wouldn’t throw around words like being grateful or kindness while at Court.” Ariyah added, “Some might hear it and think you’re a target.”
Ariyah followed the stairs down into the hold of the ship and entered the large area prepared for the Kindred event. She hadn’t been aware of how cold it had gotten outside until she stepped into the fire-lit room. Ariyah scanned the interior and its occupants, noting the individual the Herald introduced as Hadriana. If she was to guess, this was the same Hadriana that Tobias had told her about. Ariyah made a mental note to introduce herself to the woman sometimes later that evening.
“Look,” the older Rose said, after Yuri explained his interest in corpses, “There are all sorts of jobs out there, and somebody has to do them. It’s great when the person doing the job also enjoys it, or at least find it interesting. So no, I don’t think you’re wrong. At least as long as you don’t devolve to creating your own corpses to beautify. Kindred or Kine.”
Ariyah indicated to the back of the room with a lift of her chin, “Why don’t we get a drink before finding a table?”
